Soft Skills

Soft Skills also known as common skills are Personal attribute that supports situational awareness and enhances an individual’s ability to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people. It includes any skill that can be classified as a Personality trait or habit of an individual. Examples of soft skills are Communication, Teamwork, Leadership, Problem- Solving, Work Ethic, Adaptability, Resilience etc. These skills helps an individual to be more flexible which is very necessary in modern world that keeps changing.

The college instils soft skills in students leading them to acquire positive behaviour and adapt better with their Peers, teachers, parents, and others in the society. By imparting soft skills, studrtificate Course. These courses aims to hone the social and leadership skill that are crucial for the students to succeed in their Professional and Personal lives. It enhances the student’s abilities in broad areas of life like quality of communication skills, problem-solving team-work and some work ethics. Thus, the college focuses on developing the soft skills to face the challenge faced by students in their life.

Language and Communication Skills

Language in the real sense of it is said to be an accepted means of communication between two people. It is a vehicle by which human beings communicate, persuade, instruct, manipulate and exercise power. It is obvious that language has become an important social weapon for communication and other social functions of humanity. It involves ensuring that your message has reached the target audience and the receiver understands and responds as you want them to. Communication plays a fundamental role in the development of any healthy relationship. It can strengthen a mutual sense of commitment and also helps to bridge the gap between people who have misunderstanding. Indeed communication plays a critical role in all phases of interpersonal relations, from creating a relationship to maintenance of relationships. Kokrajhar Govt. College puts emphasis on the developments of language and communication skills among students through courses like Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC) as a compulsory course and Business Communication as a certificate course. AECC includes the basic communication skills knowledge important for the students. It introduces the students to the theories, fundamentals and tools of communication and to develop them vital communication skills which should be integral to personal, social and professional interactions. Business Communication is important for students to be more confident and competent when communicating in business or formal meetings and gatherings. It includes both written and oral communications. Letters, reports, memos, notices are all formal and part of commercial and business activity, so are interviews, meetings, conferences, presentations, negotiations. The study of business communication is important to make the students learn these skills.

Life Skills

The term “Life Skills” refers to the skills that bring together the social, emotional and cognitive capacities of a person to solve problems and achieve goals. It polishes the ability to adapt to all kinds of circumstances and succeed in every aspect of the society. By educating life skills, students can develop self confidence in them. It makes them cooperative and communicative and prepares them to take quick action in any unfavourable circumstances. It is very important to implement life skills in the life of students. The advanced of this modern life possess enormous demands and challenges on today’s youth. Kokrajhar Govt College has decided to enhance life skills and develop capacity of students in facing challenges in their academic and career life. The college puts emphasis on the developments of communication skills, creative thinking, decision making, problem solving, teamwork, time management, empathy, interpersonal skills among students through courses like Skill Enhancement Course (SEC), Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course as a compulsory course and Business Communication as a certificate course. SEC intends to equip the students with the skills of presentation and expression needed in the academic as well as in the professional domains of communicative use. It enhance the students employability skills and builds self-esteem, confidence, leadership skills and develops problems solving skills. AECC includes the basic communication skills for the students. It introduced students to the theory, fundamentals and tools of communication to develop in them vital communication skills which should be integral to personal, social and professional interactions. Business communication is goal oriented. Business communication helps students develop good skills in writing reports, solving problems, working in teams, communicating orally and using internet technologies. Therefore, the college aims to evolve into a critical space to incubate new ideas, critical thinking and develop skills.

Use of ICT tools by Teachers for effective teaching-learning process

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a mode of communication technology used to communicate, enhance, and optimize the delivery of information in the classroom by the teachers. ICT is the most effective mode of communication used in teaching-learning process to improve the learner’s/students’ learning ability, attention, interest, creativity and think critically. Basically ICT improves the quality education and motivates the students to learn more and create active participation.

Teachers of Kokrajhar Govt. College, Kokrajhar uses Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools for effective teaching-learning in the classroom. Departments like Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, Education, Geography, Mathematics, Statistics, Zoology etc, uses the ICT tools for better improvement and understanding in the classroom. ICT tools includes E-resources and techniques like Google classroom, Power Point (PPT), E-books, E-Journal, WhatsApp, PPT Slides, Multimedia classes, Practical Oriented, Audio Visual Teaching aids, Matlabs, Youtube Channel etc. The main objectives of using ICT tools in the classroom is to improve the students’ understanding level, attract attention and interest and active participation of the students. Use of ICT tools reduces the students’ irregularity or low attendance. The teachers of Kokrajhar Govt. College, Kokrajhar aims to motivate the students and arouse curiosity to learn. Teachers create a collaborative and friendly environment in the classroom to interact and exchange information with one another.

Upgrading the use of Teaching-Learning Materials (TLM) from traditional technique to the modern use of ICT tools helps and prepares students to cope up with the trends of 21st century. The departments of Kokrajhar Govt. College, Kokrajhar using ICT tools has in fact reduced the barriers of time and place because it has become easier to communicate and interact with students through Google classroom, WhatsApp, etc. During the Covid19 Pandemic the College was close and classes were on hold so, in order to complete the syllabus the College started using Google classroom, Google Meet, Zoom App, etc. The competency level of both the teacher and students has enhanced because of the active participation in the classroom. Using ICT tools in the classroom has also provided greater exposure to Vocational and Workforce skill for students. Use of Audio Visual Teaching aids in the classroom clears the doubt and understanding of the students. The videos or images can help students those who are facing language problems. The classroom becomes lively, fun and exciting as the technology provides opportunities and new ideas. Students develops their retention power because the old traditional technique mainly focused only reading and writing, while Modern techniques attracts attention as it presents new ideas. The use of modern techniques or ICT in classroom also helps to develop leadership skills and help them to differentiate reliable from unreliable sources.

ICT is not only helpful for students but teachers as well. Teachers’ professional development and their knowledge is enhanced with the use of ICT in classroom. Teachers are provided with new sources of knowledge and information. It motivates both students and teachers for self learning and develops their confidence.

Kokrajhar Govt. College, Kokrajhar has adopted the use of ICT in the classroom for the smooth functioning of the classroom and produces a quality education. It has becomes easier for the teachers to communicate with students with the advancement of technology. Team work and collaboration has formed amongst the student.
